Brown Bag Lunch about the Parrot Smelter

Wednesday, February 22, 2017

The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives will continue its Brown Bag Lunch series on Wednesday February 22, with a presentation by Pat Cunneen about the history and legacy of the Parrot Smelter. The Parrot Smelter was one of Butte’s earliest and best reduction plants. It operated from 1881 to 1899 and employed over 300 men at its peak. The wastes left in place from the Parrot Smelter are the largest known source of heavy metal contamination to the alluvial (shallow) aquifer in the center of Butte. Padraig Cunneen is a 4th generation Butte Irish kid. He graduated from Montana Tech with a BS in Petroleum Engineering and an MS in Environmental Engineering. For the past seven years he has worked for the Montana Department of Justice as an environmental science specialist for the Natural Resource Damage Program in Butte. He and his wife Christine are raising five 5th generation Butte rats.
