The main landfill is located 5 miles west of Butte off of Interstate-90. The facility is just north of Rocker, approximately 1 mile from the I-90/Rocker interchange, at 121074 N. Browns Gulch Road.

Main Landfill:  Open 7 days a week, year round, Sunday - Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You must have your truck or trailer unloaded and be out of Cell 4, the Main Landfill, before 5:15 p.m. Small household garbage will be accepted till 5:30 p.m. at the bins behind the Scale House.  No trailers allowed at bins. The BSB Landfill is closed on all government holidays (New Year’s Day, Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day , Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.)

Butte-Silver Bow works with local businesses and non-profit organizations to provide the community with the best possible recycling service options. In addition to self-service options, curbside recycling is available directly from McGree Trucking for an additional fee, please call them at (406) 723-3728 or visit their website for more information. 

The Butte Landfill accepts the following: antifreeze, automotive batteries, cardboard, metals, oil, and yard waste.

Cover and Secure Your Load

Lets all do our part to keep our county clean. Leave your trash at the landfill, not along the roadside. Municipal Code 8.08.030 requires you to cover and secure your load with a tarp. Failure to do so will result in a $20.00 fee.

Obey All Speed Limit Signs.

Please yield the right of way to all heavy equipment and garbage disposal trucks while on landfill property,   

What's Accepted

  • All garbage, rubbish, and trash produced through typical residential activity.
  • Special waste items such as asbestos or large dead animals, contaminated soils, large demolition jobs may be disposed of at the landfill under special arrangements by calling (406) 782-1463 or (406) 723-5295.
  • Washing machine, dryer
  • Tires:
    • Small passenger car and truck tires for $1.75/each
    • Semi-truck tires for $7.50/each
    • Heavy equipment tires for $20.00/each

What's Not Accepted

  • Liquid waste (except used motor oil)*
  • Infectious waste
  • EPA-rated hazardous waste
  • Radioactive waste
  • All waste prohibited by EPA and/or State of Montana
  • *USED MOTOR OIL will be accepted at the landfill. Please bring used oil in clean plastic sealed containers of 5 gallons or less that can be left at the landfill.
  • Refrigerators, freezers, A/C units, and any freon based appliances. 
  • Liquid paint needs to be dried out with sand or kitty litter to be accepted.
