Birth & Death Records

Effective July 1, 2021:  The price of a certified death certificate increases to $7.

Birth Records

Certified copies of Birth records can be obtained in any County Clerk & Recorder or Registrar's office in Montana from the birth years 1920 and later via mail or in-person. Records can also be ordered online through the Montana Office of Vital Statistics' VitalChek service. Records prior to 1920 must be obtained in the county of birth. These records are printed from a statewide database and can be printed for anyone born in the state of Montana. State law limits the parties that can obtain a certified birth certificate and proof of identity is required.

A BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS NEVER AUTOMATICALLY SENT AFTER A BIRTH, NOR IS THE FIRST CERTIFIED COPY FREE

For more information on who can obtain a birth certificate please see the instructions on the request form below or contact the Butte-Silver Bow Clerk and Recorder's Office at (406) 497-6346.
