[ARCHIVED] Rocker Playground Grand Opening and Day of Service

In celebration of International Kiwanis One Day, Butte’s local Kiwanis’ clubs, The Rocker Fire Department’s Lady Auxiliary and Butte-Silver Bow invite the public to a Ribbon Cutting ceremony and day of service at the nearly completed Rocker Playground. This year, for Kiwanis One Day, local Kiwanis’ club members, and volunteers from throughout our community including Montana Tech’s Circle K, local Schools Districts and Butte-Silver Bow will be assembling the final pieces to the playground under the supervision of Butte-Silver Bow’s playground certifier. Once complete, a ribbon cutting ceremony will follow soon thereafter. The event will take place this Saturday, October 22, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The Rocker Playground is located next to the Rocker Station Greenway Trailhead, off Grizzly Trail in Rocker. Following the ceremony the Rocker Ladies VFD Auxiliary will be providing hot chocolate and hot dogs.

Rocker community members are grateful to the organizations and individuals who helped make this playground and basketball court a reality, including: Butte Silver Bow, the Rocker Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary, Butte Kiwanis’ clubs, and many more. “We are so excited that our dream of building a playground and basketball court for our local children has come true,” said Elizabeth Wing Spooner, a 34-year member of the Auxiliary. “We first discussed this idea in the 1980’s, at that time, many of our members had young children, and we’ve been fund raising and speaking to our elected officials ever since. We are thankful they have finally helped us achieve our goal!”

Chief Executive Matt Vincent added, “Butte-Silver Bow works for all of our City-County’s citizens. When my staff presented me with this initiative, I made a point of instructing them to assist in any way possible to get this project completed. All the partners’ involved deserve credit because their hard work has paid off. I can’t wait to help cut the ribbon and open this wonderful space for the children of Rocker and our entire community.”

The goal of the Rocker Ladies Auxiliary has been to create a safe, inclusive playground and basketball court where children and families can gather, play, share ideas, and build a sense of community. Future generations of Rocker children will now be able to reap the benefits that only a playground can deliver.
