The Ban on “Open Burning” Has Been Lifted
Effective today, Tuesday, October 9, 2018, the ban on open burning has been lifted and will remain open through November 30, 2018. The ban had been in force since July 10th.
PLEASE NOTE: BURN PERMITS ARE REQUIRED. Butte-Silver Bow offers a burn permit service that allows citizens instant access to county burn permits. Permit holders can add multiple burn locations to a single permit.
To purchase your burn permit, go to: www.burnpermits.mt.gov. You can either activate your permit online or call 1-855-567-2958.
If you do not have access to the Internet, you may also purchase your permit at the Courthouse in the Treasurer’s Office.
As always, Fire Chief Jeff Miller and Fire Marshal Brian Doherty advise you to use extreme caution when you are burning. Please use common sense always. Do not burn during windy conditions.
REMINDER: You are only allowed to burn tree limbs and yard waste.
According to the Montana Department of Environmental Quality, the following materials may not be disposed of by open burning: food waste, Styrofoam and other plastics, wastes generating noxious odors, wood and wood byproducts that have been coated, painted, stained, treated, or contaminated by a foreign material, poultry litter, animal droppings, dead animals or dead animal parts, tires, rubber materials, asphalt shingles, tar paper, automobile or aircraft bodies and interiors, insulated wire, oil or petroleum products, treated lumber and timbers, pathogenic wastes, hazardous wastes, trade wastes, any materials resulting from salvage operation, chemicals, Christmas tree waste, asbestos or asbestos-containing materials, standing or demolished structures containing prohibited material, and paint.
