Soil sampling of schools throughout the Butte area is underway. All schools, public and private, will have all exterior areas sampled and analyzed for lead, arsenic, and mercury. Any areas that exceed local action levels will be remediated as soon as possible and as weather permits. This effort is being conducted by the Atlantic Richfield Company and their representatives in conjunction with the Residential Metals Abatement program.
The Department has been participating in the repository citing process and the siting committee, which is made up of members of the public, members of the Council of Commissioners and stake holders, has conducted field tours of the potential locations. The main objective of this process is to determine the most appropriate location to dispose of wastes that will be removed during the clean-up activities throughout the Silver Bow Creek Conservation area.
