[ARCHIVED] County reiterates opposition to Roosevelt Drive haul route

Butte-Silver Bow County has renewed its opposition to one of the potential ore truck haul routes for the proposed Butte Highlands gold mine.

Council on Wednesday OK'd a letter to the Forest Service and Montana Department of Environmental Quality emphasizing that stance.

"The (county) wants to go on record as vigorously opposing any further consideration of the Roosevelt Drive haul route option," reads the letter.

The county previously voiced its opposition to using Roosevelt Drive in an Aug. 12, 2013, letter, stating its preference for using Highlands and Feely roads instead.

"Reinforcement never hurts," Chief Executive Matt Vincent said. "Citizens are just unwilling to consider the safety concerns and impact to their lifestyle."

Butte-Silver Bow cited road safety concerns, potential adverse environmental impacts to the Blacktail and Silver Bow Creek watershed and negative effects on recreation and resident well-being in the Thompson Park and Highlands Mountains areas.

If the Roosevelt Road route isn't cast aside, the county warned it might "pursue legal remedies and/or other methods to protect the safety and well-being of our rural residents and citizens."

However, the letter reiterates the county's support for the mine project, which is estimated to provide 50jobs, and the Highlands-Feely Road option.
