[ARCHIVED] People reminded to keep pets indoors during bitter cold

The Butte-Silver Bow Animal Services department is reminding people to keep pets inside during the cold winter days and nights.

The expected cold temperatures and wind-chill can be dangerous to pets . If your animal is going to be outside for longer then just a few minutes, be sure they have access to additional food, as they burn more energy to keep warm, fresh unfrozen water and warm insulated shelter.

It is best to only let pets out for short periods of exercise in the cold weather. Be sure to wipe pets paws off after coming in from walks and playing, they can carry ice melt residue that can irritate their pads or mouths if they lick paws clean.

Also, puppies and older dogs can be more sensitive to the cold.

The best way to keep your animals safe during the cold months is to keep them warm inside especially at night. Questions: Butte Silver-Bow Animal Services, 406-497-6526.
