[ARCHIVED] Discovery Ski Area sets Thanksgiving opening

Skiers and snowboarders will be able to hit the slopes at Discovery Basin Ski Area on Thursday, Thanksgiving.

The ski area, west of Anaconda, will open for a four-day stretch before closing again for mid-week periods until opening full-time on Dec. 20.

“Thanksgiving day is always our target date,” Discovery President Ciche Pitcher said.

But November snows can be fickle, and don’t always cooperate. No such problems this year.

“We got 10 inches of snow combined on Friday night, Saturday night, and last night,” Pitcher said. “Even after Saturday night we’d thought we’d have enough.”

While the area tries to open by Thanksgiving, they don’t open full-time right away.

“Mid-week, this time of year, it’s tough to do many skiers,” Pitcher said.

Not all the runs will be open, just the Jubilee, Easy Chair and Totemoff Carpet. Ticket prices will also be discounted.
