Buster is familiar with snow -- as in cocaine.
Butte's four-legged, drug-detecting officer showed apprehension about the real thing at first.
"Now he's having fun with it," Buster's handler Steve Honer said.
On Tuesday, Buster demonstrated his sniffing skills at Butte High School. He detected methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and marijuana hidden by police in school lockers, on library shelves and in backpacks in the auditorium. The training session was without students, who are on Christmas vacation.
Honer and Buster train at least an hour per day on searches. They also have worked with police in Bozeman on their tactics.
"The more training he gets, the better he gets. He's getting better every day," Sheriff Ed Lester said.
