[ARCHIVED] Fun city: Slip 'n' slide on 1,000 feet through Uptown Butte

There’s no shortage of outdoor activities in southwest Montana.

But a 1,000 foot slip-n-slide through Uptown Butte? That would be a first.

Slide The City, a Salt Lake City-based company, is planning to roll out its giant water slide in Butte this summer.

“We’re excited to come to Butte,” said Brandon Jay, an event director for the company.

Nothing is official yet. The company is “going to be going through the special events permit process,” said Butte Silver Bow Recreation and Events Coordinator Kelley Christensen.

Jay didn’t want to say much about the planning process, only that “we’re well on our way there.”

The group is targeting Aug. 22 as the date it turns Main Street into a 1,000-foot-long water slide. Foam padding – which the event website boasts has “more cushion than your grandpa’s orthopedic sneakers” – and the vinyl slide separates the road from the rubber. Riders zoom down the water-doused slide on inflatable tubes, propelled by the formidable gravity of Uptown Butte’s hill.

The company has been around for the three years, but didn’t host events until last year. Jay was excited about changes to the slide’s design.

“We made some pretty awesome tweaks,” he said.

He hoped that the slide would appeal to everyone from children to their grandparents.
