[ARCHIVED] 'Smart Girls' co-founder Butte-bound for Equal Pay Summit

“Smart Girls” co-founder Meredith Walker is the keynote speaker at the governor’s second Equal Pay Summit April 10 and 11 at Montana Tech.

Montana women leaders in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), women entrepreneurs, and Gov. Steve Bullock, First Lady Lisa Bullock, and Lt. Gov. Angela McLean will also speak.

Founded by actor and writer Amy Poehler and producer Meredith Walker, the Smart Girls organization is dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves. With the motto “Change the World by Being Yourself,” Smart Girls encourages girls to volunteer, be themselves, and be more curious about the world they live in, according to a news release.

“The 2014 Equal Pay Summit was a huge success, but we have a lot of work to do for Montana women and girls,” said Bullock. “At this year’s summit, we’re bringing entrepreneurs, scientists, community leaders, and students together to close Montana’s wage gap by promoting leadership and career opportunities for Montana women.”

“Montana Tech is honored to host and cosponsor Gov. Bullock’s second Equal Pay Summit,” said Montana Tech Chancellor Don Blackketter. “We’re proud of the role that Montana Tech has played in launching the careers (of) some of the most talented scientists and engineers — women and men alike — in the country. This is a great chance to elevate the issue of women in leadership and pay equity so that all Montanans have every opportunity open to them.”

“Women graduating from college and starting their careers shouldn’t have to worry that they’ll get paid fairly for their hard work and expertise,” said Tech Student Body Vice President Julia Bryant. “Pay equity is a top priority for students, and we are thrilled to host this year’s summit.”

Participation at the Equal Pay Summit is free.
