Springtime is the peak season for asthma and allergy related medical problems. It's no wonder may marks asthma and allergy awareness month and May 5 is World Asthma Day.

The state Department of Public Health and Human Services says nearly 1 in 12 Montanans are living with asthma. The DPHHS said in Montana frequent asthma symptoms cause activity limitations and poor quality of life.

The Montana Asthma Home Visiting Nurse Program brings nurses to the homes of asthmatic patients to educate them on ways to manage their asthma.

Michelle Riordan from the Butte-Silver Bow Health Department, who oversees the asthma home visiting program in Butte, said, "Throughout the state when they, when people have gone through the program, they've shown way better inhaler technique, education about their medications, compliance and less days out of school and hospital visits."

The Montana Asthma Project Visiting Nurse program is free and available to children with active asthma ages zero to seventeen, or those who have had at least one emergency care visit or hospitalization relating to asthma within a twelve month period
