BUTTE – Butte-Silver Bow Health Department will begin Mosquito control activities this week in the Mosquito Control District. With warmer weather and moist conditions, the mosquito population has increased dramatically. The District generally encompasses the area from 4 Mile Road, along Blacktail Creek, to Father Sheehan Park, including adjoining neighborhoods. The District contracts with an EPA certified mosquito control company, JHS, Inc., based in Helena. The company uses a fogging machine that emits a fog, which contains an approved pesticide for controlling the mosquito population. The fogging will occur during late evening hours when adult mosquitoes are at their most active levels. Windy or rainy conditions will cause the fog to dissipate rapidly; thus making it ineffective to use in these conditions. JHS will continue to monitor mosquito numbers and provide abatement services as long as required.
