A retired firefighter who served as a volunteer during the rescues at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 will be the guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony of the 2015 Field of Honor. Lt. Kevin Shea was serving with the Fire Department of New York’s famed Rescue 1 during the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, when he fell more than 45 feet into the bomb crater when a floor of the damaged building collapsed. His injuries were extensive and he was forced to retire. In 2001 when the two planes brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, Shea was one of the first to volunteer to help with rescue efforts. This time, many of the victims below the rubble were members of his former unit.
The 2015 Field of Honor Opening Ceremony will be held on Thursday September 10 at 5:15 pm in the field at the intersection of Continental Drive and Mercury Street. The ceremony will honor the victims of the 9/11 tragedy as well as Montana’s first responders who have perished in the line of duty since then. The Opening Ceremony and the Field of Honor are open to the public free of charge. The Field of Honor is a display of 1000 American Flags tagged with the names of our local heroes.
